Solar Licensing

Solar system licensing linked to NEPRA, government clarifies role, as the Power Division rejected reports tying licensing directly to federal orders. The spokesperson said the Solar Licensing process follows regulatory rules set by the authority, not separate government directives.

Meanwhile, the Power Division explained that regulations for obtaining licenses already exist under NEPRA. Distribution companies only implement these rules. Therefore, officials stressed that linking federal government instructions to solar licensing requirements is misleading and incorrect.

In addition, reports claimed that new amendments require all solar users to obtain a NEPRA license. Under the updated system, consumers must apply for licenses based on electricity generation capacity. Previously, users with systems up to 25 kilowatts could receive free licenses from distribution companies.

However, the revised policy now requires users to pay fees according to their load. Consumers must submit a pay order in NEPRA’s name. They will also pay an additional 1,000 rupees per kilowatt, increasing the overall cost of installing solar systems.

Furthermore, authorities said connections under net billing projects will still be available. Hybrid solar users may install systems without a NEPRA license. Solar Licensing linked to NEPRA, government clarifies role, while political voices, including Senator Palwasha Khan, criticized the move as unfair to the public.
